Norbett Lynch Kngwarreye

Norbett Lynch Kngwarreye

Norbett Lynch Kngwarreye was born in 1950 at Yambah station, he is of an Arrernte tribe group known as Anmatjere.

He lives on his traditional land approx 70kms of Alice Springs, in Central Australia. Norbett was taught his Corkwood Dreaming stories by his father Don "Popsie" Lynch.

Norbett's sisters also have been given the rights to paint parts of this story. Norbett's children also paint the Corkwood Dreaming stories.

This work is represented in many private collections overseas, one of which, the Donald Kahn Collection, has been touring the USA and Europe since 1991, with Norbett's largest piece in the show.

Like other artists living in Alice Springs who began working in the Western Desert style in the late 80's, Norbett's work exhibits a conscious dialogue with the expectations of the western art market.

In 1992, Norbett painted a large Corkwood Dreaming for a permanent exhibition at the Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre in Alice Springs.

After taking pride in the Centre Gallery for 4 years, a French collector purchased this "Corkwood Dreaming" in August 1996 for $ AUS 15,000 one of the highest prices ever paid for an Aboriginal painting in Alice Springs.

Norbett has sold his artwork throughout Australia and collectors all over the world, being one of most successful artist.
